On 17 December, UK DRI Director Prof Siddharthan Chandran gave evidence to the House of Commons Science, Innovation and Technology Select Committee. The cross-party committee of MPs was investigating how UK science and research has contributed to the eradication of disease

Prof Chandran discussed with policymakers how breakthroughs in discovery science are opening up new opportunities for prediction, prevention and personalised intervention, enabling the development of tools and treatments which are transforming the lives of people affected neurodegenerative conditions.

Prof Chandran reflected on his experience as a practising neurologist, setting out the way to the timely and accurate diagnosis and treatments that people living with dementia need.

‘Patients are not interested in which institute or doctor is doing what. What they want is fast, accurate diagnosis and a route into a streamlined pathway that will begin to give them personalised, tailored intervention.

If you want to do that, you have to invest in the discovery science. The only way we are going to make a difference is better understanding and unpicking the complexity of the disease.’

Watch the full session to hear more about the UK DRI’s vision for the future of dementia and neurodegeneration research and why the UK is well-placed to be at the forefront of transformative improvements in diagnosis, treatment and care.

Policy & advocacy

The UK DRI is committed to ensuring that dementia research, and UK science more broadly, can continue to thrive and deliver much needed breakthroughs. We engage with decision makers from across the political spectrum, to help create the best possible public policy environment for our scientists to carry out their life-changing work.
