Prof Tara Spires-Jones (UK DRI at Edinburgh) has been elected the President-Elect of the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS). The news was announced during the FENS meeting in Barcelona on 10 July. Prof Spires-Jones will be President-Elect July 2026-2028, President July 2028-2030, and Past-President July 2030-2032.
Prof Spires-Jones co-leads the Synapses, Circuits, Cognition and Physiology division at the UK DRI, and is also a UK DRI Group Leader, and Director of the Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences at the Institute for Neuroscience and Cardiovascular Research at the University of Edinburgh.
Her research focuses on the brain changes that cause Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. She discovered that synapses, the connections between neurons, are damaged by pathological proteins that accumulate in the brains of people with dementias, and that pathology spreads through the brain by jumping through synapses.
It is an honour to be elected president-elect of FENS. I am passionate about supporting neuroscience research and researchers aligned with FENS’ missions to foster knowledge exchange, advance neuroscience, empower the community, and invest in the future.
Group Leader & Research Division Lead
In her new role, Prof Spires-Jones will support FENS members across 33 European countries, seeking to understand the nervous system and find ways to prevent and treat neurological and psychiatric disorders.
