UK DRI and Race Against Dementia launch bold new AI Innovation Fellowship Scheme

Author

The UK DRI is thrilled to announce a new partnership with the charity Race Against Dementia, alongside the launch of a Fellowship Scheme designed to support the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) approaches to advance understanding of dementia and related conditions.

The new scheme aims to support the next generation of researchers to drive pioneering, high-impact research, build global collaborations, and transform the lives of those affected by dementia, using the latest advancements in AI and machine learning technology.

Race Against Dementia funds early-career researchers to accelerate progress towards a cure for dementia. Since it was established in 2016 by racing legend Sir Jackie Stewart OBE, the charity has supported 65 top researchers globally and donated more than £15m to groundbreaking research.

In motorsport, success depends on constant innovation, rapid decision-making and teamwork. Breakthroughs in dementia research needs that same urgency and willingness to disrupt, which is why we are excited to be partnering with Race Against Dementia to launch a joint fellowship scheme. Artificial intelligence technology is already making a huge impact in science and healthcare. Through this new scheme we will champion the rising stars driving AI innovation in neurodegeneration research.

The scheme is open to early career researchers with a maximum of six years’ postdoctoral experience. Applicants from outside the field of neuroscience, or who have spent time in industry, are particularly encouraged to apply.

Funding for up to £500k is available for salary and project costs, distributed over four or five years. Successful awardees will benefit from a comprehensive training package to build leadership, communication, resilience and career development skills, including access to EMBO’s prestigious Lab Leadership course.

Lydia Beaton, Race Against Dementia’s Director of Operations, said:

“Dementia research does not exist in isolation – it thrives when knowledge is shared across disciplines, institutions, and industries. This partnership with the UK DRI will help us support and empower the next generation of research leaders – building partnerships with AI, data science and engineering experts to tackle dementia from every angle. Together we will develop new ways to diagnose, treat and prevent dementia, bringing us closer to the breakthroughs that millions of families around the world so urgently need.”

We invite those interested in the scheme to attend our free webinar on 7 October at 12pm BST, for a chance to learn more about the scheme and hear directly from representatives from the UK DRI and Race Against Dementia.
