Synapses, Circuits, Cognition & Physiology
Synapses and neural circuits are the fundamental substrates of brain function, supporting all aspects of behaviour including cognitive functions, motor control, and core physiological processes like sleep–wake regulation. In neurodegenerative disease, these systems fail in a progressive and interconnected manner, leading to widespread dysfunction across multiple domains. However, there are also circuits, and individuals, with resilience to disease related pathology. The mechanistic drivers of such resilience and vulnerability are an important open question.
We aim to deliver a unifying framework for synaptic and circuit vulnerability across disease stages and use that framework to guide selective circuit repair and restoration of function. Our Division’s work aligns directly with UK DRI priorities: mechanistic discovery, translational readiness, and measurable impact on disease burden. We will pursue an interdisciplinary strategy integrating synaptic biology, circuit physiology, brain-state neuroscience, computational analysis, and human translational research.
