Biography

Hi! I'm Lorenzo, from Italy 🙂 I did my Bachelor in Immunology at The University of Edinburgh and obtained my PhD in Cancer Immunology from Cardiff University. I am now a Senior Technician at UKDRI Cardiff. Even though I sit at my desk typing all day I still like to think of myself as an Immunologist. Currently, I use bioinformatic approaches to try and understand the biological mechanisms that could explain why genes crucial to the function of the adaptive immune system have consistently been reported as top genetic hits in Alzheimer's Disease GWAS studies. My work takes place at the interface of immunology, neuroscience, genetics and bioinformatics. I therefore consistently engage with specialists in all these fields and try to act as the bridge that brings their knowledge together, which is not always easy, but very rewarding. In doing so, we hope to understand how the adaptive immune system is involved in AD, which could lead to the development of new (or repurposed) immunotherapeutic treatments for AD.
